Our aquarium facility is a sanctuary to fish that are extinct in the wild, providing a base to protect species across the globe.

We’re working hands-on at Lake Acıgöl in Turkey, which is larger than the city of Brighton and supports all kinds of life, including flamingos, pelicans, and a unique species of killifish.

This fish is on the brink of extinction because of unrelenting pressure from sodium sulphate mining and invasive mosquito fish.

Mining beside the lake has caused the previously freshwater lake to become up to two times saltier than seawater. Surprisingly, we have found that this is helping the killifish to beat its other key threat, the invasive mosquito fish. But this isn’t sustainable, and that’s where we come in.
