Mother’s Day came early for Southern white rhinoceros Tuli, after zookeepers at Whipsnade Zoo prepared a heart-shaped, breakfast banquet for her and her calf, Nandi.

The rhino mum and her seven-month-old calf were treated to a feast of their favourite hay and pellets, arranged in the shape of a heart, for Mother’s Day in March 2022.
Team leader Mark Holden said: “Tuli has been an incredible mum to Nandi over the past seven months and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate her, as well as mums everywhere.
“Nandi is a very curious and boisterous calf, with loads of energy, so it must be a pretty tiring job for Tuli, keeping tabs on her all the time.
“Hay and pellets may not be every mum’s dream breakfast, but for a rhino mum, this is the perfect start to the day. If she’s really lucky, Nandi will allow her a nice quiet day of grazing and maybe even a nap!”
Born on 21 August 2021, Nandi was a welcome addition to the ‘crash’ of Southern white rhinos at the UK’s largest Zoo, as well as to the European Endangered species breeding programme. Visitors can see Nandi and Tuli, as well as Asian elephants, African lions, Amur tigers, and 10,000 other animals, for the perfect, family day out, this Easter school holidays at Whipsnade Zoo.
