It's International Tiger Day on 29 July and it's the paw-fect opportunity to celebrate our Amur Tiger at Whipsnade Zoo!

Makari an Amur tiger at Whipsnade Zoo

Whipsnade Zoo is home to an Amur tiger called Czar, who, along with his brothers Dmitri and Makari, was born here at Whipsnade Zoo in 2018.

To celebrate these amazing animals, join us at Whipsnade Zoo to learn all about their incredible adaptations, the threats tigers are sadly facing in the wild, and how ZSL is working to protect them.

When will International Tiger Day activities take place?

On Saturday 29 July, we are celebrating our Amur tigers ALL DAY! Join us for a tiger talk, Q&As, tiger enrichment or feeds, arts and crafts, plus lots more!

Head to our Asia section to get involved in crafts, study tiger artefacts, learn about our tigers and our conservation work with them, discover what it is like to be a tiger keeper, and understand the importance of training and enrichment for our family. All activities are included in the cost of your Zoo ticket or membership

Tiger in the snow

While Whipsnade is home to an Amur Tiger habitat, London Zoo has Sumatran tigers

Why are Amur Tigers so special?

Featuring the distinctive orange and black stripes, the Amur tiger is the largest of the subspecies of tiger. Due to its habitat it has a long coat of fur and a large ruff around its jawline.

Amur tigers are seriously endangered in the wild - there are estimated to be between 265–486 in the Russian Far East.

Come and join us in celebrating our amazing Amur Tiger as we make your day that little bit more stripy!
