Family outdoor fun this summer

7 of the best things to do at Whipsnade Zoo this summer

23 June 2026

Looking for things to do with the kids over the summer holidays? There's fun for the whole family at Whipsnade Zoo.

With thousands of animals to discover (including a baby elephant, a baby rhino, and two giraffe calves), special events, and both indoor and outdoor play, connect with nature at Whipsnade Zoo this summer. Here's seven of the best things to do when you visit.

1. Join the Zoo Crew!

This summer, kids can become part of our Zoo Crew! We’re packing the summer holidays with fun roleplay and costume dress-up activities, so junior animal-lovers can explore what it’s like to work at Whipsnade Zoo. From scooping up poo, to wading through our very own version of the River Thames, activities will run from 18 July - 2 September 2026 and are included with admission to the Zoo.

2. Look out for our new arrivals

A mammoth new arrival was born in June 2026 - an endangered Asian elephant calf! Look out for him, alongside mum Donna, sister Nang Phaya, and the rest of Asian elephant herd.

3. Enjoy an icy treat

Our animals love an icy treat in the hot weather, just like us. You can pick yours up from one of our many shops and catering outlets - remember, Gold members get 10% off!

There are plenty of shady spots as you saunter around the Zoo, as well as picnic benches out of the sun for you to enjoy an ice cream and a cold drink. Plus, there are lots of indoor animal viewing areas, perfect to take a break from the sun, or for if the weather isn't on your side

4. Have a Hullabazoo adventure

Kids can hit the beach with our giant sand pit! They'll love exploring our outdoor play area with a mini safari jeep, swings, bridges, tunnels, and climbing frames.

Little ones can also let off steam in our soft play area - Hullabazoo Indoor Play - complete with air conditioning to keep you all nice and cool. The play area is bookable online 24 hours in advance of your visit - don't forget, that there's an exclusive Gold Member slot, every day at 10.30am.

5. Don’t miss daily talks and Birds of the World

Did you know that lemurs like to sunbathe? Or that hippos secrete their own sunscreen? Learn all about our amazing animals and their adaptations in our daily talks, and have the chance to ask an expert your burning questions. Plus, our Birds of the World demonstration is a must-see - you'll be in awe of these majestic birds as they soar against the blue sky and swoop above your head.

6. Enjoy views over the Downs

There’s no doubt that our penguins have the best spot in the Zoo, but you can enjoy the stunning scenery too. On a beautiful summer’s day, there’s nothing better than soaking up the blue sky, a cool breeze, and looking out across the Downs. Pick up a snack or a cold drink from our Viewpoint Deli and sit back and take in the views - there’s 600 acres to explore at Whipsnade, so you’ll have earned a rest!

7. Sleep over at the Zoo

Ever wondered what happens at the Zoo when all of the visitors have gone home? Enjoy Whipsnade Zoo after-dark with one of our two overnight experiences. Pitch your tent for Nature Night Camping, or stay over in a cosy lodge this summer to discover what our animals get up to at night. Adult and family nights are available for both experiences.

Every visit to Whipsnade Zoo helps us to care for wildlife around the world as part of international conservation charity, ZSL.
